ABOUT

Dr Charl Verwey is a Paediatric Pulmonologist from Johannesburg in the Gauteng Province. His practice is well-known for its caring, patient approach to children with lung diseases.

Dr Verwey established his solo practice in 2023. In private practice, you often see different pathologies than we see in public healthcare. To be a well-rounded pulmonologist, you need to be able to deal with both of these sides.

He knew from a very young age that he wanted to be a doctor. He just had to figure out a way to achieve this dream. He is passionate about helping those who don’t necessarily have the voice to speak for themselves.

Dr Verwey’s special milestones include the following:

He established the Division of Paediatric Pulmonology at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital in 2011. He was the first elected Academic Head of the Division of Paediatric Pulmonology at the University of the Witwatersrand in 2020.

His PhD studies focussed on the long-term pulmonary sequelae of the respiratory syncytial virus on children’s pulmonary function using infant and preschool pulmonary function testing techniques. His research interests included HIV-associated lung disease, chronic suppurative and acute infectious lung diseases and their sequelae.

Dr Verwey is involved with the following social responsibility programs:

He is a former chairperson and current National Asthma Education Programme executive council member. He is also an executive council member of the South African Thoracic Society.

A lung infection happens when a virus, bacteria, or fungus gets into your lungs and causes inflammation. Lung infections can range from mild to severe and may require medical treatment.

This disorder affects the lungs and other parts of the respiratory system. It usually develops slowly and may get worse over time. Chronic lung disease may be caused by smoking tobacco or breathing in second-hand tobacco smoke, chemical fumes, dust, or other forms of air pollution. Types of chronic lung disease include asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pulmonary fibrosis, asbestosis, pneumonitis, and other lung conditions.

This test is used to measure how well the lungs work. It measures how much air the lungs can hold and how quickly air is moved into and out of the lungs. It also measures how much oxygen is used and how much carbon dioxide is given off during breathing.

This procedure uses a bronchoscope to examine the inside of the trachea, bronchi (air passages that lead to the lungs), and lungs.
